I used to find winter decor after Christmas a challenge and not knowing where to start.
My family and myself did succumb to a dreaded after Christmas viral illness. The bright side of illness and hanging around my house, is the opportunity to refresh my decor for the remainder of winter.
This year I took a simple approach with white.
Although, white can sometimes be deemed as sterile or boring, I find it refreshing after a holiday like Christmas. The white in my house feels like a breath of fresh air from the recent chaos.
Don’t take me the wrong way, I do love the smell of fresh pine, but there is something to be said for a clean neutral slate to start off January.
Shelves
These little shelves are from a local home decor gift shop.
I originally bought them because the wall in my living room needs some anchors on each side of the mirror and I am still not ready to introduce to lamps with two toddlers.
I took the time while stuck in the house to change all my current photos and update them for the season. This is a great way to update and change the look and feel of a room with minimal cost.
I print my photos at Walmart online, usually reasonably priced and come out great!
Simple white and faux greenery for the rest of winter eliminates the spring look to earlier but still keeps around green from the most recent holiday.
I call these items my shelf trinkets. I have a devoted box in my basement so that I can easily change up my decor throughout the year or when I feeling like I need a change without spending (I am proud of being able to refresh without spending a dime)!
Mantel after Christmas
Winter decor after Christmas is challenging because spring decor certainly does not match the weather outside here in New York this time of year.
I left the fireplace mantel a blank slate for upcoming spring. You can check out my 2023 Christmas Mantel for future ideas here.
My mantel also does not have much room due to our TV (a compromise I had to make with my husband who wanted the bigger TV).
Although, I don’t have a Frame TV (even though they look great). My TV, which is a little more budget friendly, displays our family photos when idle (such a cute feature).
Curtains
Here is a quick look at my velvet curtains that I had up starting in the fall months when the weather started getting chilly.
I love these curtains for their statement and warm up effect, but after the new year I am ready for a total refresh.
The refresh this year led me to my basement to rescue some of my old curtains for a “new” look. Which led me to these oldies but goodies…
See! There is a good reason I keep things…although my husband may feel differently about this statement. These white curtains are actually an IKEA purchase from long ago.
IKEA is a great place for curtains as they have some great quality options for a budget price (many of items at Ikea have delivery now as well).
Wrap Up
Decorating after Christmas for me is a time for refresh and clean slate for the new year.
The best part is to freshen up your space after the holidays with things you already own, but continue to keep things cozy for those continued Winter days ahead.
Don’t be afraid to go down to your scary basement and see what you can put together!
